Bangkok BankAccountsOpens new accounts

COMMUNITY DATAPOINT, NOT OFFICIAL POLICY. A reader living in Bangkok reports that Bangkok Bank opens accounts for US citizens, and says they're fairly sure but not certain. Bangkok Bank hasn't confirmed this. Separately, since May 2025 Bangkok Bank generally requires foreigners to hold a long-term visa (see the Bangkok Post entry).

Bangkok BankNew deposit accounts (foreigners)Opens new accounts

Not specific to US persons. Since May 2025 Bangkok Bank opens new deposit accounts for foreigners only if they hold a long-term visa (for example retirement or other non-immigrant visas), are married to a Thai national, or own property in Thailand. Tourists and other short-stay visitors are generally excluded. US citizens face these rules plus the W-9 paperwork.

Kasikornbank (KBank)AccountsOpens new accounts

Implied open: KBank's FATCA/CRS FAQ says it has collected FATCA/CRS forms from customers since April 2023 and reports US persons' accounts to the IRS via the Thai Revenue Department. In November 2024 it emailed existing customers asking for a self-certification plus an IRS Form W-9 where applicable (US citizens). That points to KBank documenting US-person accounts rather than refusing them, but no KBank page says outright that it opens new accounts for US citizens.

Kasikornbank (KBank)AccountsOpens new accounts

COMMUNITY DATAPOINT, NOT OFFICIAL POLICY. In a May 2025 thread started by an American on a Non-O visa, several members recommend KBank and report recent success. One was told a rental agreement plus visa and passport would be enough. Requirements vary by branch, and big-mall branches used to foreigners are suggested.

Krungsri (Bank of Ayudhya)AccountsOpens new accounts

Implied open: Krungsri's FATCA Q&A (announced 1 June 2025) says US persons opening new accounts must complete an IRS form, and that US customers give a W-9 with their TIN. That means it documents US persons rather than refusing them. No Krungsri page says outright that it opens accounts for US citizens. ("verity" in the quote is the bank's own typo.)

Krungthai BankAccountsOpens new accounts

Implied open: Krungthai's FATCA page says it reports to the IRS on accounts held by US citizens, so it holds such accounts. Caution: the same page says the bank may consider closing accounts of customers who don't answer the FATCA questionnaire or supply the documents it asks for.

SCB (Siam Commercial Bank)AccountsOpens new accounts

COMMUNITY DATAPOINT, NOT OFFICIAL POLICY. In a May 2025 thread started by an American on a Non-O visa, members say they bank with SCB without problems, and one says a Non-O visa plus a Thai driving licence was enough, with no residence certificate. We found no official SCB statement on US persons.

2026-10-19
SCB (Siam Commercial Bank)AccountsOpens new accounts

COMMUNITY DATAPOINT, NOT OFFICIAL POLICY, AND OLD (September 2014). A US citizen reports that SCB had them fill out an IRS W-9 and an internal SCB form when FATCA came in, so their account continued with the paperwork.

ttb (TMBThanachart Bank)AccountsOpens new accounts

Implied open: ttb's FATCA page offers the W-9 to customers declaring American nationality. The page is bilingual; the quote is ttb's own English line.

Bangkok BankAccountsUnclear / conflicting

COMMUNITY DATAPOINT, NOT OFFICIAL POLICY. In a May 2025 thread started by an American on a Non-O visa, some members say Bangkok Bank works for them. Others say it has become strict about residency certificates, and one was told new accounts were for property owners only. The reports point to branch-by-branch residency rules, not a US-specific ban. They conflict on whether a newcomer can open an account.

StashAway Thailand's help article 'I'm a US Tax Resident; can I open an account?' says US citizens can't open an account at the moment. The page loads its answer with JavaScript, so this was checked against the search-index copy.

Interactive Brokers (IBKR)Brokerage account & IRAsOpens new accounts

IBKR treats US citizens as US tax residents wherever they live. Its staff, replying on IBKR's own Campus site, say it offers IRAs to US citizens living anywhere in the world, and that you keep your account when you relocate unless the new country is sanctioned. Fidelity Investments (US)Brokerage & mutual fundsKeeps existing only

Fidelity's FAQ for investors outside the US says it doesn't open new accounts for people residing outside the US. Existing customers who move abroad may keep accounts, but they can't buy mutual fund shares (including adding to funds they already hold), and further limits vary by country. Fidelity's site blocks automated fetches, so this was checked against the search-index copy of the official page. Re-check it manually.
